2010 Academy Awards Best Dressed

My best dressed list for this year's Academy Awards is very short. I was not too impressed with this year's dresses (click photos to see enlarged).
















This year, I absolutely loved Demi Moore, Kate Winslet, and Kristen Stewart's dresses. Kate Winslet was actually put on a lot of worst-dressed lists. I completely disagree. I think that her dress is lovely. Demi Moore is probably my best dressed overall for this year. I really loved the style and color of her dress.





















Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock were also put on a lot of worst-dressed lists this year. I completely disagree. I loved Bullock's overall look, and as a huge noir fan, I thought that Streep's outfit was magnificent.

2010 Academy Awards Worst Dressed

I thought about it a lot and finally have put together my worst dressed list for this years Oscars.












I really like Anna Kendrick in general, but I really did not like her dress. I thought that the color really washed her out. A darker color would have been a lot better. I also thought that the color was bad for Carey Mulligan. I may have worked a little better with her real hair color, but I think that black was a little too dark with her new blond hair. It was the style of Charlize Theron's dress that I did not like. The color is really nice, but the flower/rose/things are really poorly placed. It just looks awkward.













I also thought that the style was bad for Diane Kruger and Jennifer Lopez's dresses. Julianne Moore's dress is another one that just needs to be a different color. She looks completely washed-out.

















The last two on my worst dressed list are Maggie Gyllenhaal and Nicole Richie. There is nothing particularly wrong with the colors, I just really do not like the style for either of them.

So what do you all think? At the top of my worst dressed list is probably Diane Kruger. Who was on your list?

Bright Star






















I have a list of films that I want to see before the Oscars (in a little over two weeks). So far I am doing pretty well. Bright Star is nominated for costume design. The film was written and directed by Jane Campion. The film starts in 1818 and takes place over a period of three years. It follows the romance between John Keats and Fanny Brawne.













I was familiar with John Keats simply through his poetry, but did not know much of his actual life. It specifically showed his life with Brawne. I really enjoyed this film. It was really interesting. So much was conveyed by showing so little. The soundtrack was really good, and the art direction and costumes were amazing. I won't be surprised if it wins an Oscar.

The film had a really good ensemble cast. Paul Schneider and Ben Whishaw were both really good. I was probably most impressed with Abbie Cornish. I have previously seen her in several films. Ever since I saw her in Candy, I have had pretty high expectations from her. I was definitely not let down. Her performance was really beautiful.

I would definitely recommend this film. It is definitely a must-see!

An Education













I just saw An Education. I have been pretty excited about seeing it ever since I first saw the trailer last year. The film was at the Chicago International Film Festival this past October, but all of the showings were sold out, so I was unable to see it. The film is based on a Memoir by Lynn Barber and is adapted by Nick Hornby. As time has gone by, my expectations have gotten higher and higher. This past month, An Education was nominated for three Academy Awards (Actress in Leading Role, Best Picture, and Best Adapted Screenplay).











I must admit that I was a little disappointed. Part of it may have been how different the film was from what I expected after seeing the trailer. I think that I really just let my expectations get a little too high. The film was great. Everyone was really wonderful. Emma Thompson and Carey Mulligan were both really good, but I think that I was most impressed with Olivia Williams and Alfred Molina. Their characters did not really have to be that believable, but they each really brought something to their roles. I ended up really liking Alfred Molina's character a lot more than I thought. There was something really sweet about him.













The story did not have much going on as far as the story or the screenplay, but I would probably still recommend it. I really enjoyed the costumes and a lot of the music. It's not quite a must-see, but is still worth checking out.

The 82nd Annual Academy Awards Nominations!

We are well into this year's award season. The nominations for this year's awards were announced this morning (click here for your own printable ballot). Last year, I learned a lot about the history of some of the most popular award shows including requirements to vote, past winners, etc (click here to see the post).I have always been a really big fan of the Oscars. I probably have not missed a single show since I was little. They used to be shown on my birthday weekend, but due to the Winter Olympics, they will be shown on March 7th this year.

These are only some of the main nominations (honestly, I was just too lazy to type them and in and to link them up). If you would like to see a full list of nominees and break-down of nominations by film, you can visit the Oscar website. I must admit, that I do not have any particular feelings either way when it comes to this year's Oscars. I was also a little surprised by the number of films nominated for best picture. I feel like it is about twice as many as usual. I feel like if that many are going to me nominated, then there isn't really a point.  The only nomination that I was really excited about was Sandra Bullock's. I haven't seen The Blind Side yet, but I really like her. Maybe I will get more excited as time goes on.

I am going to wait to fill out my official ballot until I see a few more of the nominees.

Award Season




This year I have been thinking a lot about the different award show. I have never really paid that much attention to the specific shows and how awards are given out. I hope that you find this interesting.

The Golden Globes Awards
  • The annual Golden Globes are decided by HFPA (the Hollywood Foreign Press Association). They accept applications from journalists, correspondants, columnists, reporters and photographers every Febrary and March. Among the requirements are permanent residency in Southern California, registration with the Motion Picture Association of America, and appointment by two active members of the HFPA. Today, the members represent fifty-five countries. A maximum of five journalists are admitted each year.
  • This year was the 66th annual Golden Globes. They are heldevery January. Winners receive golden globe statues.
  • In 1955, the Golden Globes began honoring television as well as film.
  • "The Golden Globes were always given out by journalists in the association up until 1958, when Rat Packers Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr. stormed the stage, with whiskeys and cigarettes in tow, and took over the show, to the delight of the audience. They repeated their performance the next year (this time at the request of the HFPA) and since then, the stars have reigned supreme at the Globes."
  • Most individual nominations: Jack Lemmon 22, Meryl Streep 19.
  • Only three-way tie: Jodie Foster ("The Accused"), Shirley MacLaine ("Madame Sousatzka"), and Sigourney Weaver ("Gorillas in the Mist") for Best Actress in 1989.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards
  • The annual Screen Actors Guild awards are decided by SAG (Screen Actors Guild). The SAG is a performers' union. Performers are eligible to join after working on a SAG film in a principal role, after gaining 15 days of work or meeting background entry requirements.
  • This year was the 15th annual SAG Awards. They happen every January. Winners are given small actor statues.
  • George Burns received the first televised Life Achievement Award. Ann Margret accepted it for him.
Film Independent's Spirit Awards
  • Films must be submitted for the Spirit Awards. They must be at least 70 minutes, have played either one week in a commercial theatre or have been shown at any one of the following festivals: Los Angeles Film Festival, New Directors/New Films, New York, Sundance, Telluride, or Toronto. They cannot have cost more than 20 million dollars to make.
  • Film Independent members with voting privileges and IFP members vote on the awards. Any idependent filmmaker or film lover may join. The annual fees are $95.00.
  • This year was the 24th annual Spirit Awards. They occur every February.
The Academy Awards
  • The Academy Awards are decided by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Membership in the Academy is by invitation of the Board of Governors and is limited to those who have achieved distinction in the arts and sciences of motion pictures.A candidate must be sponsored by at least two members of the branch for which the person may qualify. Each proposed member must first receive the endorsement of the branch’s executive committee before his/her name is submitted to the Board.
  • This year was the 81st annual Academy Awards. They occur every February. Winners are given Oscar statues.
  • The documentary category appeared for the first time in 1941.
  • Shrek was the first winner for animated feature film in 2001.

My Best Dressed Oscar Pics




For best dressed, I picked Natalie Portman, Diane Lane, Virginia Madsen, Jennifer Grey, Taraji P. Henson and Amy Adams. For absolutely best dressed, I picked Kate Winslet.

I also want to give Mickey Rourke a special Kudos for best improved since the Golden Globes. It is hard to tell with these pictures, but he looks not only fashionable better, but also much healthier. Good job on loosing the sequins, the highlights, and the opaque-framed glasses.

Now, the reason that I am annoyed deals directly with Revolutionary Road or the lack of its presence on the list. I am especially annoyed with what happened with Kate Winslet's nomination. Those of you that saw the recent golden globes know that She won for best actress (for Revolutionary Road) and best supporting actress (for The Reader). If you read the Academy Award nominations, you will notice that she has been nominated for best actress for The Reader. Her role in The Reader is a supporting role, so it seems unlikely that she will win. This really bugs me. She would have such a better chance of winning were she to be nominated in the supporting actress category. I of course also think that she should be nominated for Revolutionary Road. I do not understand how she could be left off the list.
Does any one else have any opinions on the nominations?
