Dream Cast Thursday! The Little Mermaid

For this week's Dream Cast Thursday, I will be casting a live-action version of the Little Mermaid. While choosing the cast, I had the Disney cartoon (The Little Mermaid 1989) in mind, but also the original story by Hans Christian Andersen. I think that it would be really interesting to see a film like this, because the original story was so much darker than the film.

In the original film, the voice of Ariel was done by Jodi Benson. I wanted to make sure to cast someone that seemed young, because in the original story, the little mermaid is supposed to be 15 years old. I recast Emily Browning.

Next I recast Prince Eric. In the film, his voice was done by Christopher Daniel Barnes. In the original story, he is only supposed to be 16 years old. When I recast him, I went a little older. It took a while for me to finally settle on someone. I recast Rupert Friend.

Ursula's voice was originally done by Pat Carroll. When trying to cast the Sea Witch from the novel, there was only one person that really stuck out in my mind. I ended up casting Helena Bonham Carter.

There was one character in the story that didn't make it into the film. I felt that the character of the young princess that the prince ends up marrying is fairly important (if you didn't know, the Prince and the Mermaid do not end up together). I thought for a while and ended up casting Odette Yustman.

So what do you all think? Would you like to see a version a bit more like the original story, or are you just too happy with the film? Would you like to see a live-action remake of the Disney film? Who would you cast in yours?
